DefenseLINK - Thousands Show Up For Iraqi Military Recruitment

The hand-wringers and naysayers in Washington would like you to believe that the Iraqi people are not interested in or are too scared to defend their nation. Of course the MSM (mainstream media) won't bring you the stories that prove those assertions to be flawed so we must look to The US Defense Department's own website for the skinny. Here is an excerpt:

Many recruits showed up with proof that they were serving when Saddam Hussein's regime fell and were subsequently released from duty. Former Iraqi army Maj. Hussien Ali Kadhun, 48, traveled about an hour and a half by bus to rejoin.

"I want to serve my country and fight the terrorists," he said through a translator. Ali Kadhun said he graduated from a military college in 1979 with a bachelor's degree in military science. He returned to school to study law shortly after his release from the army in 2003.

Iran & Syria Sitting In A Tree, S-T-R-E-S-S-I-N-G

The mad Mullahs of Iran and dictators of Syria have joined forces to supposedly repel any Western aggression towards them. This union clearly shows that these 2 rogue nations know that the "heat is on".

Here is the entire article by The Associated Press:

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) - Iran and Syria, who both are facing pressure from the United States, said Wednesday they will form a united front to confront possible threats against them, state-run television reported.

"In view of the special conditions faced by Syria, Iran will transfer its experience, especially concerning sanctions, to Syria," Mohammad Reza Aref, Iran's first vice president, was quoted as saying after meeting Syrian Prime Minister Mohammad Naji Otari.

"At this sensitive point, the two countries require a united front due to numerous challenges."

The report did not specifically mention the challenges, but both countries are under U.S. economic sanctions and the targets of intense American pressure.

The United States has accused Iran of seeking to produce nuclear weapons, while relations with Syria have deteriorated, especially since Monday's assassination of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri.

Many Lebanese blamed Monday's car bombing in Beirut on Syria, but the Syrian government has denied responsibility. Washington is recalling its ambassador from Syria in apparent response to Hariri's killing.

Washington also accuses Syria of aiding anti-Israeli militants and supporting insurgents in Iraq.

Tehran and Damascus have been strategic allies for years. Syria was the only Arab country that continued its warm relations with Iran during the 1980-1988 Iran-Iraq war.

It is clear to any who is paying attention that Syria and Iran must be dealt with. The WMD that was not found in Iraq after the invasion will most likely be found in Syria and some reports say that Iran is only months away from having 1 or more nuclear weapons. Mark my words girls and boys, these matters will come to head this year.

United Nations Admits It Failed The Iraqi People

In an unusual show of candor, a high-level UN official admitted today that the they were wholly unprepared to run a program of the size and scope of the Iraqi Oil For Food Program.

Here are excerpts from the Associated Press article:

U.N. Deputy Secretary-General Louise Frechette said the United Nations was unprepared for the mammoth task of providing humanitarian relief for 24 million Iraqis and hoped it would never be given a job like the oil-for-food program again.

"We certainly have taken pride in the fact that the program has served to feed and provide basic necessities to people and that their own personal faith improved over the life of the program," Frechette said on Tuesday. "But we have also seen that the program has revealed some basic weaknesses in our own internal systems."

She was speaking at a press conference to respond to an interim report by former Federal Reserve Chairman Paul Volcker of his investigation of corruption in the oil-for-food program. The report criticized the U.N.'s system of awarding contracts, its failure to follow-up some recommendations from auditors, and its policy of keeping documents from scrutiny by the 191 U.N. member states.

Frechette said some of the weaknesses, especially dealing with contracts, had been addressed before Volcker issued the report on Feb. 3, "but clearly, there were other weaknesses in that system, from which we are learning."

"Personally, I hope to God we never get another oil-for-food program or anything approaching that kind of responsibility, which was tantamount to trying to oversee the entire import-export regime of a country of 24 million people, which was a tall order," she said.

"If ever, God forbid, we were to be given that kind of responsibility in the future, we certainly would go about it differently and we certainly would apply the lessons that we are learning from the exhaustive investigations that are going on at the moment," Frechette said.

Perhaps the transparency of functions and operations that has eluded this institution for decades is finally being instituted. Perhaps.

Planning On Watching The Oscars? Think Twice If You Are Pro-Life

According to sources all over Hollyweird, this year's academy Awards host, Chris Rock has gone on record as opining that abortion is a "beautiful thing".

Excerpts from a NewsMax.com article:

During a recent comedy club routine, Rock was quoted as saying, "it's beautiful (that) abortion is legal." "Rock's statement is repulsive," said Erik Whittington, director of American Life League's Rock for Life. "In the name of comedy, he is making light of abortion - a heinous act that violently takes the lives of preborn babies and traumatizes women."

Far too often, celebrities use their star power to push the pro-abortion agenda. "It is tragic that so many in Hollywood have chosen to embrace the Culture of Death," said Whittington.

"Unfortunately these individuals do have some influence, especially over young people. Rock for Life is calling on the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to remove Chris Rock as host of this year's awards show. If the Academy keeps Rock as the host, we encourage pro-lifers to send a message to both the awards show and its sponsors by not tuning in."

"We are tired of the continued attempt to downplay abortion for what it really is," said Whittington. "The truth is that abortion is not beautiful. It is hideously ugly. Abortion is an evil act that always takes the life of a perform baby and is never morally acceptable."

In a day and age when reckless and dangerous behavior is glorified, letting a negative influence such as Chris Rock into our living rooms is akin to allowing our children to believe we think the filth they spew is ok.

UPDATE: Here is a great commentary on the subject.
