Clemency For The Inconvenient! Terri Schiavo's Story

By Christine Korenthal

As I write this column, Theresa Marie Schindler Schiavo may have only 24 hours before her sentence is carried out in Clearwater, Florida. Her sentence? Death by starvation and dehydration. Her crime? The inability to object on her own behalf.

Theresa Schindler-Schiavo is 41 years old. She cries when she is sad or in pain, laughs when she is happy or amused, and requires food and water in order to live. She isn’t dying. She isn’t even ill. She is not hooked up to any machines such as a ventilator or blood pressure monitor. She does not require life support and she is not comatose. Terri is brain damaged. She is bedridden, can’t speak, and is unable to feed herself. All of which may be improved with therapy. She has a family full of people willing to love her and take care of her and her special needs. Unfortunately, the only person who can legally speak for her, her husband, Michael, won’t allow this. He just wants to take away her feeding tube, required only during feeding times, and starve her to death.

Michael has a serious conflict of interest in this case. He claims that his quest to end Terri’s life has to do with her wishes not to be attached to any machines. Her family and friends contend that Terri did not feel that way at all. Interestingly, Mr. Schiavo only remembered this alleged conversation after receiving 1.5 million dollars for Terri’s care and rehabilitation from a medical malpractice lawsuit. Almost immediately thereafter, he began his attempts to end her life. Additionally, the circumstances surrounding Terri’s collapse, which led to her current condition, are highly suspect. Respected pathologist, Michael Baden has called into question whether Terri may have been a victim of domestic abuse, rather than a victim of a natural chemical imbalance. Last, but not least, Michael Schiavo is engaged and has fathered two children by his fiancĂ©. It is understandable that he has moved on, but he should not have done this while still married. There is no way on Earth that a guy with this many ulterior motives should be making choices for Terri, yet the court sees no problem with it.

The courts have failed Terri Schiavo. She has received minimal care in the last 15 years and no rehabilitation. She has a family that just wants to take her home, yet the courts want to kill her because her husband says that it is what she would have wanted. They have ignored the fact that what her husband asks is in clear conflict with Terri’s religion as a Catholic and goes against Papal statements about the preservation of life. If Michael succeeds, legal precedent will be set, and the next victim could be you or me. Go to Terri’s site, read the facts in this case, and then act. Write to the media and government representatives, pass out fliers, and spread the message, whatever it takes. We cannot let this happen in our society. Go to http://www.terrisfight.org/ to find out what else you can do to help and find out more about this case. I can’t emphasize the importance of your immediate action. If enough of us speak up, we can make a difference.

Hunter S. Thompson - X-Rated

***UNDERAGE AND EASILY OFFENDED SKIP THIS POST***

In addition to penning "Fear & Loathing In Las Vegas", Thompson wrote this:

We have become a Nazi monster in the eyes of the whole world--a nation of bullies and bastards who would rather kill than live peacefully. We are not just Whores for power and oil, but killer whores with hate and fear in our hearts. We are human scum, and that is how history will judge us...No redeeming social value. Just whores. Get out of our way, or we'll kill you.

Who does vote for these dishonest shitheads? Who among us can be happy and proud of having this innocent blood on our hands? Who are these swine? These flag-sucking half-wits who get fleeced and fooled by stupid rich kids like George Bush?

They are the same ones who wanted to have Muhammad Ali locked up for refusing to kill gooks. They speak for all that is cruel and stupid and vicious in the American character. They are the racists and hate mongers among us--they are the Ku Klux Klan. I piss down the throats of these Nazis. And I am too old to worry about whether they like it or not. Fuck them.

Loathesome rhetoric from a suicide queen. I am really not surprised he killed himself.

Taliban Commander Seeks To Unite Afghanistan Behind Hamid Karzai

As we discussed previously, it seems some of the old Saddam-regime members have begun negotiating to come into the new Iraqi government. It would appear that a similar process is well underway in Afghanistan as well. Here are some excerpts from The Telegraph.

The commander, Abdul Salam, earned the nickname Mullah Rockety because he was so accurate with rocket propelled grenades against Russian troops.

He later joined the Taliban as a corps commander in Jalalabad before being captured by the Americans after September 11.

Now he is a supporter of President Hamid Karzai and is tempting diehard Taliban fighters to accept an amnesty offer and reconcile themselves to Afghanistan's first directly elected leader.

After the Taliban's three-year struggle against a superior US force, there is growing optimism among the Americans and Afghan government that the end is close.

More than 1,000 people have died in violence in the past 18 months, but attacks have tailed off since the guerrillas failed to make good their vow to disrupt the presidential election in October, which saw a huge turnout and was won by Mr Karzai.

Zalmay Khalilzad, the US ambassador to Afghanistan, said yesterday that a group of Taliban militia including senior officials will soon join the Afghan government's peace initiative.

This is good news indeed.

Americans Not Being Realistic About When Troops Should Come Home

I was astonished to read the new Harris Online Poll results. Contained in the polling data was some very disturbing new trends.

Almost six in 10 (59%) adults now favor bringing most troops home in the next year and 39 percent favor keeping a large number of troops in Iraq until there is a stable government there.

This suggests that Americans want troops home more than they want the job to be finished properly. It get's worse though:

Specifically, almost six in 10 (59%) adults now favor bringing most troops home in the next year and 39 percent favor keeping a large number of troops in Iraq until there is a stable government there.

The good news is that the vast majority of Americans polled in this survey have a realistic view of what Saddam might have done had we not ousted him from power:

- 88 percent of U.S. adults believe that Saddam Hussein would have made weapons of mass destruction if he could have (down slightly from 90% in November).

- 76 percent believe that the Iraqis are better off now than they were under Saddam Hussein (same as November).

- 64 percent believe that history will give the U.S. credit for bringing freedom and democracy to Iraq (up slightly from 63% in November).

- 64 percent believe that Saddam Hussein had strong links to Al Qaeda (up slightly from 62% in November).

- 61 percent believe that Iraq, under Saddam Hussein, was a serious threat to U.S. security (down slightly from 63% in November).

I have noted that in each, the number to the affirmative is down but wonder if that has more to do with the differing samples of the 2 separate polls. In any case, American's beliefs about Saddam seem to run counter to what the MSM was and still is trying to sell us on about the invasion.
